Cleveland+ is a global leader in medical imaging, comprising one of the largest and fastest growing clusters within the region’s biomedical industry, with imaging employment increasing an impressive 86% between 2004 and 2008.

The Cleveland+ region is unlike any other location in the nation in that all major players across the continuum in medical imaging have a presence here, including: 

• Global players such as GE Healthcare; Siemens Medical; Philips Healthcare; Toshiba Medical Systems; and Hitachi Medical Systems – these companies have a combined 90% worldwide market share in CT and MRI;
• 55+ mid-market and early-stage companies covering multiple modalities of components and devices, e-radiology, information technology and service, and distribution; and

• Companies relocating or collocating to Cleveland, including M2M Imaging from New Jersey, and ViewRay Incorporated from Florida.
  
  

In 2011, Medical-imaging maker Philips Healthcare will open a $38.4 million Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center at Cleveland’s University Hospitals Case Medical Center in a give-year partnership to research, test and commercialize the next generation of medical imaging technology.

The rapid growth of the medical imaging industry in Northeast Ohio is driven by significant investment activity; an active talent and workforce pipeline; and clinical and research strengths facilitating collaboration and innovation in imaging.

Since 2002, more than $369 million has been invested in the Cleveland+ medical imaging companies and infrastructure. Medical Imaging is a key focus area within the State of Ohio’s biomedical investments, and state-supported imaging initiatives include: the Case Center for Imaging Research; Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center; The Ohio Scholars Network of Biomedical Imaging Excellence; The Wright Center of Innovation in Biomedical Imaging; and The Molecular Imaging Technology Center.
